Hating Waste

Although we have become pretty much a disposal society, I tend to try and fix and repair things that I have purchased rather than just tossing them out, which fills up our landfills and keeps the big business guys raking in the big bucks. I would much rather take my shoes and other footwear to the local shoe repair shop which is a great little mom and pop business that is struggling to keep there doors open, which just breaks my heart. Since Walmart came to town we have all seen way too many small businesses going out of business and we all need to do what we can in order to keep more good folks employed by someone else other than Wally World.

So when I noticed that our outdoor furniture is looking pretty shabby I decided to try and find patio chair repair business that could help with our outdoor furniture repair concerns. Luckily it only took a few minutes by using the Internet to locate a reputable company that will hopefully come to our rescue. We have worked very hard for several years to get our front, side and back yard looking good and to become a place that we can kick back to relax as well as a place that we can entertain during the nice weather days that we are blessed with having throughout the year. We really lucked out this winter and so far spring has been most excellent as well. I sure hope we continue to be blessed during the summer and fall months, but something tells me that that would be pushing our luck just a tad much.

It would really be nice if I could find some one who could help get that darned old hot tub out back up and running again. It is so old that it has become a challenge finding replacement parts for what it needs to be used and enjoyed once again. There is nothing like sitting in a nice hot tub and letting these old bones get a good soaking and letting those tense muscles relax after a hard day of work.

Home energy audit

One of the things that I liked about living in New England was that the Central Maine Power Company offered a free home energy audit to all of their customers for many years. As part of their home energy audit they would bring an insulation blanket to put around the water heater, and actually install it for you for free!

When we moved down here, we contacted our local electricity company to see if they would perform the same type of free home energy audit for us on our new house, but were disappointed to learn that they charge a fee for that service. With all of the talk we hear about how important it is to save energy and reduce our carbon footprint, I really had expected more of a consumer-friendly attitude around here!

Kid Sister

Thought I was doing my kid sister a favor by sending her the link last week to the carpet cleaning round rock for her to check out, but she hasn’t bothered to respond to my email so I guess she doesn’t appreciate the information. She has been acting a bit strange lately, not sure what is up with that. I do know that she is spending way too much time on Facebook these past couple of months since she was laid off from her job as a school bus driver. I’m afraid that she is sinking into a depression and since she lives so far away it is a challenge for the rest of us (her family) to try and help her through this whole ordeal.

It’s a shame that families are moving and drifting so far apart these days. I really believe that it was a much better deal for all concerned when everyone lived within a 30 mile radius, we could see each other, talk with each other and help each other out so much easier.

Guest Room Twin Over Full Bunk Bed

The wife has decided that with some of the money that we are getting back from our 2011 tax return we are going to find and buy a brand new twin over full bunk bed to put in the guest room. I had never heard of a twin over full bunk bed but after looking at some of the ones that I found online, I have to agree that they would be a good replacement for the futon that is currently in there now.

Last week when I was sick, she decided to sleep in the guest room so as not to catch the nasty virus that threw me for a loop for 3 days. She had never slept on the futon before and was surprised to find how uncomfortable it really was. It was so uncomfortable that she ended up sleeping the last two nights on the sofa!

So after searching the net for the perfect twin over full bunk bed we have decided to go with the Donco Twin/Full Mission Stairway Bunk Bed in Espresso and the fact that we aren’t going to be charged for the shipping and handling I do believe that we will be getting one heck of a deal.

April Showers, Bring It On

It’s a good thing that it is finally raining today or all of the window boxes that I worked so hard to get ready for this year’s season wouldn’t stand a chance with this heatwave that we have been experiencing this Spring. They are all ready talking about putting water restrictions in place soon if we don’t get a lot more rain than what we have been getting so far.

These particular flower boxes are very special to the wife and I. They belonged to her grandmother who was known all over town for her green thumb and her beautiful windowboxes. It took several years to get these window boxes from her estate, what a tangled mess that whole thing turned out to be, but we finally have them and each year it is a pleasure to see them all flowing over with beautiful and colorful flowers in the carefully chosen window sills through out the house.

The windowbox seems to be making a come back as I am seeing more and more of them being used around town. Spring is my favorite time of year and as the old saying goes “April flowers bring May flowers” so bring on the rain!!!
