Lessons

Recently our oldest son decided that he wanted to learn how to play the guitar.  Naturally, the places that give lessons require that the students buy musical instruments instead of loaning them out.  Fortunately for me, I still had my old acoustic guitar from when I was going through that “I want to learn to play the guitar” and I lent it to him for class.  The teacher told him that he needed a new bridge, so I took it to the local music shop where the owner repaired it for free.

He continued with the guitar lessons for only about six weeks, and then decided not to continue after that.  I sure was glad that we didn’t spend a lot of money buying him a new guitar!  And now the guitar is packed away for the next time someone decides to give it a try!

Hot Summer Days

Filed under: Business, Fun, Hobbies, Internet, Shopping, Sports, Technology and Gadgets, Travel — Copa @ 4:51 pm

The word is that there are still Myrtle Beach vacation deals available for what is left of the summer season. A lot of school systems are starting school earlier and earlier which cuts out a good amount of vacation time for families. When I went to school, it always started the day after Labor Day, which of course is always in September. But I’m hearing from various friends and family members that most schools are opening in August. One friend’s kid started school yesterday, for goodness sake, it is only the first full week of August. The others that I’ve spoken with are starting August 22nd and the 23rd. I think that is so wrong, but nothing I can do about it at this point.

Anyway if I was to be planning a beach trip I’d being using the Internet to find the best Myrtle Beach hotel that might have accommodations still available. Being an avid golfer I’d certainly be looking for a place that could help with a good golf package to get my business, like what I found at http://www.grandeshores.com. They seem to have something for just about everyone at this resort. Too bad I’ve used up all of my vacation days for this year, the beach sounds great. It has been a long, hot summer this year. Can’t imagine what we are in store for this winter!

A ticket to fun

Filed under: Computers, Family, Fun, General Living, Internet, Local, Shopping, Sports — Copa @ 8:07 pm

My sister-in-law has been asking me what kinds of family-friendly shows there are around here.  She’s been thinking about coming to visit us in a couple of months, and wants to bring her kids with her.  She was particularly interested in trying to buy some Sesame Street Live Tickets or Disney on Ice Tickets.  Personally I’d rather get some Kentucky Derby Tickets but I guess that wouldn’t make her very happy!  Besides, the Derby isn’t local, and we don’t have the resources to travel that far right now.  And it will be quite some time before I’m up to traveling that far anyway.  Just my luck I’d travel there and then be in too much pain to leave the motel room!

So it is probably just as well that we look for local entertainment.  I’m sure glad that finding places to see and go and do is so much easier than it used to be – just a few clicks of the mouse and you have fun at your fingertips!

Rodeo Days

Filed under: Business, Family, Fun, Hobbies, Sports, Travel — Copa @ 10:56 pm

I remember when I was a kid, my uncle and his wife picked me up and put me in the back of their station wagon along with their brood of 5 kids, my cousins and was taken to the Houston Rodeo for the day. It was a bit scary at first. Everything was so large and exciting, larger than life like. But after the first initial shock wore off I was good to go and really had a blast for the rest of the day that we were there.

I gained a new respect for these folks who really put their health and their lives on the line to entertain the public and compete against each other. I’ve never been to another rodeo, but I do think about it from time to time. Like when I’m switching channels and I run across a rodeo taking place. I stop and watch for a few minutes, enjoying a few good memories and then move on. Or I see some rodeo going on in a movie or television show.

I’ve heard that they are starting to sell tickets to concerts at the Houston Rodeo and I’ve taken a fancy to the idea of taking the wife and a few other select members of the family to witness this fascinating sport. We haven’t done anything exciting like that in some time. Now that the holidays are all over and done with we need something to pump us up again. The Rodeo might be just what we need!

Sports equipment

Have you ever wondered where folks can buy a radar gun to measure how fast someone pitches a ball?  My neighbor was telling me that he is thinking about signing on as a volunteer coach for some Parks and Recreation programs for the school kids.  He thought it might be fun to buy one to show the kids how radar works to track more than speeding cars!

I went over to his house today to pick up the chain saw he had borrowed from me and he invited me in for coffee and fresh Krispy Kreme donuts.  Well, I’m not one to pass up an offer of free coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts so I was in the door pretty quickly!  He showed me a website that he was looking at where the company sells different radar equipment for different purposes.  I never realized that there were so many different radar devices; some for baseball, some for tennis, even some for golf!  I can’t even imagine why anyone would want to know how fast a tennis ball or golf ball was traveling!  But this website had other interesting items for sale on it the piqued my interest – such as portable ice rinks.  I’ve always wanted to set up an ice rink for the kids to ice skate on in the winter!  Now I know where I can get one!

Animal competitions, Olympic style

My wife found some really funny videos on youtube. They are done by the BBC and show animation versions of animals competing in winter sports with people. I thought I’d like to share them with you from time to time. I hope you enjoy them! Here is the opening ceremony video!

My friends from the land of ice and snow

Filed under: Family, Friends, Fun, General Living, Health, Hobbies, Shopping, Sports — Copa @ 8:37 pm

Many of my friends from New England still keep in touch on a regular basis.  That sure helps me to get through the many long and lonely days of recovery from my accident!  Jarod called me to wish me a Merry Christmas last night.  He was telling me that Santa had been really good to him this year.  He said that he found a Burton snowboard under the Christmas tree at his parent’s house when he went over there for dinner.  Jarod says he’s not quite sure how to send Santa a notice of new address from when he moved out to his own place last year!  In addition he got a new Burton beanie and a new Burton jacket to wear while he is out on the slopes trying out his new board.

I never learned to snowboard; I always enjoyed alpine skiing and snowmobiling.  Snowboarding always seemed like a lot of fun that I’d like to try someday, but now with all of these back injuries I have I’ll probably never get the chance to try it.  My wife says we’re too old for that anyway and it’s time we started acting more our age.  To be honest I think she’s just worried that some of the other boarders might run into us and that could really hurt!  Well, too old, or too injured, either way it looks like I’ll just have to be satisfied watching that sport from a distance!

All Work & No Play

I’ve heard so many good things about the Myrtle Beach Hotel  - The Horizon at 77th, from numerous people through out the years. If every thing goes right next year I would really like to plan a long weekend at Myrtle Beach. It has been such a long time since I’ve been at a beach, so I think that I’m due at this point. My tax refund check should be enough to do a few things that I’ve been wanting to do and just haven’t had the extra bucks to throw at. All work and no play makes for a grumpy old man.

Using the Internet will make the task of making the Myrtle Beach Accommodations for the trip a much easier one. I’m surprised that travel agents are still in business these days with so many people going online for their arrangements. I’m sure I can get a good deal online if I play my cards right and find some good promotions ahead of time. If The Horizon at 77th doesn’t work out I’m sure that I can find another top notch Myrtle Beach Accommodation, one that offers a nice golf package would be a nice bonus.

Hunting for sport

Filed under: Family, Fun, General Living, Sports — Copa @ 6:40 pm

A friend of mine sent me a video from Youtube that was showing a man killing a deer with his bow. It was a large buck, and just moments after he shot it a second large buck came along. The video was claiming that the second buck was coming to fight the buck that was shot but I don’t think that’s the case at all. I think that the deer were caged deer, and tame to start with. In all possibilities the second buck was coming to see if the dead one was really dead. When the hunter shot the first buck, the buck walked around for a few moments before falling down, then got up and fell down again. I thought that was rather sad. I’m glad I only hunt with a camera! My wife would not approve of my hunting to kill!

Beautiful walks

Some of the prettiest places a person can go are to the Myrtle Beach Golf courses.  My friend Russ and his wife go on annual Myrtle Beach Golf Vacations. Russ says that he loves to Golf Myrtle Beach every chance he gets.  His wife likes to golf, too, so they enjoy trying out the many different courses there.

Ever since their youngest child moved out of the house ten years ago they’ve been reserving Myrtle Beach Golf Packages and stay for several weeks every February. Since that is the coldest month of the year up here they like to pamper themselves and just pack up and go and pretend that winter just isn’t happening! Russ always come back from his vacation nicely tanned, and extremely happy.

They like to stay in a condo where they have their own kitchen and separate living area apart from the bedroom.  They say that it is more relaxing when they don’t feel cramped up in a small motel room.  I have to agree I enjoy condo vacations too!

A long hunting season

Filed under: General Living, Sports — Copa @ 7:33 pm

I was surprised yesterday when my neighbors were telling me that they were going hunting next weekend. I thought that hunting season ended Thanksiving weekend! Apparently down here there is a longer season than New England. Around here folks can hunt deer until sometime in March! I guess that is up until the does start to give birth. I can’t even begin to imagine shooting a pregnant doe! That just creeps me out!  I understand that the hunting season is long because the herds are too big, but I am also concerned about the safety of the general public – are we folks that live out in the countryside supposed to wear blaze orange year round?

A good outdoorsman watch

Filed under: Family, General Living, Hobbies, Shopping, Sports, Technology and Gadgets — Copa @ 3:54 pm

My brother-in-law loves to deer hunt.  We drew his name in the annual Christmas gift exchange, so my wife and I have decided that we would buy him a casio pathfinder watch for the Christmas gift this year.  They are on sale now at the bluedial.com website, and they offer free shipping as well!  His wife says that would be the perfect gift for him because when he is out hunting he loses track of time and is never home in time for dinner!

This particular watch never needs batteries because it is solar powered.  And a compass is included in the watch, so there will be no excuses for getting lost!

Where can we go?

Filed under: Family, Fun, General Living, Hobbies, Local, Sports — Copa @ 3:44 pm

We’ve lived in this area for almost three years now, and we are still learning our way around. We have a jet ski, but I don’t know where there are local public boat landings to launch it for us to use it. I have looked at maps and see lakes, but don’t know if any of the lakes are better for jet ski use than other lakes are, or if any of the lakes restrict the usage of jet skis! So, I want to learn some of that information so we can have some jet ski fun this summer!

If you eat, sleep, and drink golf

Filed under: Food, Fun, General Living, Hobbies, Local, Shopping, Sports — Copa @ 3:25 pm

If you eat, sleep, and drink golf, then you should check out the Myrtle Beach Golf Vacations for your next vacation.  You could stay and Golf Myrtle Beach courses every day for a month and not play the same golf course twice!

I have never heard of an area where the concentration of golf courses is so dense!  And in that area, in addition to Myrtle Beach Golf Packages to entertain yourself and your family, you can enjoy the ocean’s sandy beaches, great restaurants and amusement parks.  There are great shows you can go to for an evening’s entertainment.

There are a wide variety of lodging accommodations to stay in as well.  From standard motel rooms to luxury condominium suites, whatever suits your fancy you are sure to find it there!  And what is really great about this is that you don’t even have to leave the country to enjoy every minute of your vacation!

To many men, “going green” means going golfing!

Filed under: Family, Friends, Fun, General Living, Health, Sports, Travel — Copa @ 8:50 pm

My wife and I have been thinking about taking up golfing.  My wife says she used to play golf before we met, but she quit playing when she became pregnant with her last son (prior marriage.)  Something about working full time, taking college classes and raising a family left her precious little time to play golf!  Well now the kids are grown and I’d like take her on a vacation – just the two of us.

My doctor has recommended that I get more exercise, and my wife seems to think that I would enjoy learning how to play golf.  She has been talking to her brother about the possibility of him and his wife, and us, signing up for a Myrtle Beach Golf Package.  Myrtle Beach is close enough for us to drive to in a day, and there are a lot of Golf Packages Myrtle Beach options that we could choose from.  We could sign up for one of the Myrtle Beach Golf Vacations where we combine golfing with a hotel room, or we could stay with friends that live nearby and just sign up for tee times.

Exciting game

Filed under: Education and Personal Growth, Family, News, Sports — Copa @ 6:13 am

The game last night was extremely exciting!  I thought the Steelers would win, then the Cards made a great comeback, and then the Steelers stole the game at the last minute!  Very exciting!  I woke up my wife with all of the whooping an hollering in the last few minutes of the game!

She was very annoyed with me for waking her up because she had to get up early to go to work this morning; and she’s still annoyed with me today because she is so tired.  She says she might never “let me” watch another Superbowl again!

What a game!

Funny Superbowl commercial for cash4gold

The cash4gold Superbowl commercial, featuring MC Hammer and Ed McMahon made me laugh.  Especially the part where MCHammer was talking about turning in his medal that shows him holding a medal!  And when Ed McMahon was talking about turning in his gold golf club!  What a riot!

They were promoting the business cash4gold, where the company buys gold items.  Eventually the gold gets melted down and reused somehow, but the point being that the average “Joe the plumber” can take some no-longer-wanted gold items to the cash4gold company and exchange the item for cash.  I’ve done that before, back in the 80’s when the economy was struggling and the gold prices were very high!  I traded in my high school class ring!

The cash4gold company not only buys unwanted gold, but they also buy old silver and platinum.  You might not have a lot of gold sitting around, but you might have some old silver sitting around in the form of candle sticks, serving trays, “silver service” tea sets and genuine silver “silver ware.”

It’s been a while since I’ve paid attention to that sort of thing, but I’m pretty sure that I have some sterling silver candlesticks lying around that I could sell.  I recall that back in the 80’s I was thinking about selling them and took them to a local jeweler to see if he could tell me if they were sterling or not, and he told me that there was a mark on them that said “sterling” so that meant that they were!

Will you be watching the Superbowl?

Filed under: Food, Fun, Sports — Copa @ 2:45 pm

I plan to be watching the Superbowl shortly.  I’m rooting for the Cards, because they’ve never even BEEN to the Superbowl, and the Steelers have been there a few times, and have won before.  So, I’m always one to “root for the underdog” – probably because I’ve always felt like the underdog myself most of my life!  So, I’ve got the nachos and sodas ready for snacking, and am looking forward to some great commercials, and the half-time show with “The Boss” should be great!

What a sports town!

Having lived so far away in an area of the country where you had to drive at least four hours to go watch the closest NFL game, I never got that interested in sports.  It was usually a passing conversation.  Well, okay, I admit I was really into NASCAR and went to some local races because we had racetracks near where I lived.  I loved buying a pit pass and going into the pits and talking with the drivers and crews.  I actually had my business sponsor a few cars for a couple of years!  It was cool going to the races and seeing the car racing with my business logo on it!

But when I moved here I despaired that I didn’t seem to be able to find any racetracks.  And I wondered about all of the folks here talking about their favorite football team.  So I learned after a while that in order to “fit in” around here I needed to start getting more interested and involved in football, at least to be able to keep up with the conversations!  A buddy of mine suggested that I try going to the Comcast.net’s website to find out the current NFL football scores and keep up with all of the action.  The site also has scoreboards, schedules, standings, statistics, forums, and videos.  I think this will definitely come in handy!

New boots

You can’t go just anywhere when you’re looking for a good pair of Motorcycle Boots.  Especially when the bike you are riding happens to be a Harley.  Every man’s foot is different; some men prefer a police boot for comfort as opposed to a rough and tough cowboy boot.  There are many styles and many sizes; you need the right one to fit your foot.  Personally I’ve always enjoyed the engineer style boot.  Waxed, of course.  Now they come with a Harley emblem on the back of them.  When you’re riding with a group of people, almost anyone and everyone in the group will be sure to look to see what everyone else is wearing.

If you are interested in buying motorcycle boot made by Chippewa Boots, Dr. Martens, Gear Box Boots, and Rocky , a good website to buy them from is the copshoes.com website. They have a wide variety of styles and sizes for both men and women, and their prices start as low as $79.95. From boots that stop at the ankle, to boots that come up to the knee, they have them all! They also offer customer service over the phone Monday -Friday 8:30 – 5:00 CST

A good day

Filed under: Family, General Living, Hobbies, Parenting, Sports — Copa @ 10:30 pm

My daughter is visiting us this weekend from New England.  This is the first time she has come down here since we’ve moved, so I’ve been very excited to show her our house, and the area.  I’ve been taking her to a few local restaurants and she has been taking lots of pictures.  She’s been helping me to do a few things around the yard that needed doing, like mowing the lawn (I have two riding mowers so she rode one while I rode one.)  I especially enjoyed taking her to the shooting range yesterday; she was impressed with how well I shoot!  It was also nice that the instructor at the range gave her some tips to improve her aim!

Then we went to one of my favorite all-you-can eat buffet restaurants, which we all really enjoyed.  So it was a good day.

Chicago Cubs

Filed under: Business, Family, Food, Friends, Fun, General Living, Internet, Sports, Travel — Copa @ 12:53 pm

My cousin is a big Chicago Cubs fan.  He sent me an email yesterday that I was just reading a few minutes ago about how excited he is that his office is going to arrange for a Wrigley roof top party for the entire office and their families.  The party is going to be held at the Ivy League Baseball Club Rooftop location which is across the street from Wrigley Park.

I’ve never been to Wrigley Park, and so I find it hard to imagine that watching a game from a rooftop across the street from Wrigley Park would be better than watching the game from inside the stadium!  But he says that the rooftop has a great view of the park, and is only 478 feet away from home plate!

The Ivy League Baseball Club is endorsed by the Chicago Cubs, and can accommodate from ten to two hundred people.  They serve food and beverages right there on the rooftop!  I was looking on the Internet at their website and saw that it looked like a great place for a party!  Their website lists their menu, which is standard ballgame fare, and has an interesting fact sheet that tells about how their club is the first rooftop club that was established in 1914.  He’s invited me to come join them; I’ll have to check my schedule!

White water rafting

Filed under: Business, Computers, Family, Friends, Fun, General Living, Internet, Shopping, Sports, Travel — Copa @ 10:54 pm

My daughter has been talking about taking a Pocono rafting trip with some of her friends, and she was wondering if I’d like to come along.  I asked her for details, and she told me to look at the whitewaterchallengers.com website to get a better idea of what trips are available.  So I went onto the website to see what they had to offer.  This is a larger company than I expected to find!  They offer rafting trips in two different states, using five different rivers.  They offer not only rafting, but kayaking as well.  They have all different levels of adventures, from the very mild, designed for families with children as young as five years old to the very advanced adults only very sports minded athletic type people only.  They have day trips and overnight up to week long camping adventures.

So I’ve been looking over the website and talking with my wife about it.  I asked her if she wanted to come along, and she said it sounded like a lot of fun, and would have to see if she can get the time off of work.  I think we would like to try one of the very beginner trips; my wife is not as athletic as she used to be, and I’m getting old, so we should take it easy – at least on the first try out!

Hunting binoculars

My brother just sent me a pair of Nikon Monarch hunting binoculars as a belated birthday present.  Seems odd to me that he doesn’t seem to remember my birthday until his own birthday is approaching!  I think he’s figured out that if I don’t get a birthday gift from him, he’s not going to get one from me!

The box that the binoculars came in indicated that he bought them from the Internet site opticsplanet.com.  They sell a large variety of really high quality Nikon binoculars.  These binoculars he sent me are really something special!  They are Shockproof, Waterproof, Fogproof, rubber-armored. I’ve never had a set of binoculars this fancy before!  I know they are designed for hunting, but I’ll just be using them to enjoy watching the wildlife in my own backyard.

Don’t drink and boat!

Filed under: Friends, Fun, General Living, Sports, Travel — Copa @ 6:26 pm

If you don’t put your life jacket on before you get on the boat, rationalizing that you’ll grab it when you need it, by the time you realize you need one, it could be too late to grab it!  I think that everyone who applies to register their boat should be required to take and pass a Boating Education course.

Boating and life jackets

Filed under: General Living, Sports — Copa @ 6:20 pm

When we lived in New England, we lived on a large lake and we enjoyed taking our boat out for a spin whenever we had a chance. Unfortunately, at least once a year we would read in the local newspaper that someone had drowned in the area due to excessive alcohol consumption which resulted in reckless boating. The law does not require everyone to wear a life jacket, simply that there are enough on the boat for each one. I think that is fairly useless; everyone should be wearing their life jacket – they should put it on before they get in the boat and take it off only after they have gotten off of the boat.

My darling fighting daughter

Filed under: Family, General Living, Shopping, Sports — Copa @ 6:27 pm

My daughter called me last night to brag about how she got her green belt in karate earlier in the day!  Wow!  I can’t even imagine her in karate class at all!  She was telling me how much she enjoys the class, and that her favorite part of class is sparring.  She is thinking about entering some local competitions in upcoming months.

I asked her what kind of body protection she uses to keep herself from being injured, and she reassured me that she uses the same proforce sparring gear from AMWA that the competitors use on the American Gladiator television show.  That made me feel a little bit better.  I don’t like the thought of anyone hitting my daughter!
