It’s All About Their Swimming Pools

I would imagine that a good profitable business to be involved in down in the grand old state of Texas would be a cleaning and restoration service, due to the amount of hurricanes and other extreme weather issues that go along with living where the climate is all about the massive amount of water in and surrounding such a large state.

My step-mother moved down to Texas years ago. I remember the first couple of years we were constantly watching the news and worried each time any extreme weather would hit anywhere around the part of Texas that she was now making her home. It was terrifying to think that she had moved somewhere that she really adored only for her to get hurt, or have her home destroyed or even worse lose her life. Many times we were not able to get through to her land line or her cell phone or through email attempts and we would become frantic calling each other and driving each other crazy with worry until one of us would hear from her. Some times it would take several days and it was agony.

She would always have some pretty amazing stories after things settled down about how people would band together to help each other board up their properties to prepare for these storms. I’ll never forget the first time she told me that the first thing that they would do was throw all the lawn chairs, pool accessories and other outdoor furniture into their pools to keep them from blowing away and possibly causing more damage in the process or even worse, hurt someone while flying around in the high winds. I thought that was a pretty cool idea, something that I never would have thought of, but it certainly makes sense if you think about it. Another good business for down that way would be a pool supplies company what with all of the pools that they have to enjoy almost all year round down that part of the country.

Bathroom Visits

I have been seeing a lot of infomercials about Colon Cleansing products over the past few months; it makes me wonder exactly how many people really believe that you need to completely empty your intestines every day to be healthy?  From all the commercials I see, they are either extremely successful selling their product, or are desperate!

My understanding is that it is normal for your intestines to have some solids in them all of the time; it is just part of nature.  I can’t imagine using any kind of product on a regular basis to keep my intestines empty all the time!  I think that is just carrying things too far!  I don’t think it can possibly be as healthy as the infomercials are claiming it is!

There have been times when I need a laxative, I’ll admit that.  But on the other hand, my wife has irritable bowel syndrome and she already is in the bathroom more than she wants to be; I think a colon cleansing regimen would kill her!

My in-laws have recently joined a health program where they are trying to eat only vegetables, and they have been talking to us about how important their program thinks colon cleansing is.  I still think they are a little bit nuts!

Fighting diabetes

I never would have thought that stress could cause diabetes, but I am a walking example of that exact situation. When we moved down here I was as healthy as a horse, but in only a few short months I was diagnosed with diabetes. I had not been feeling well for a couple of months and finally asked my wife to take me to the doctor’s office. At first the doctor told me that there was nothing wrong with me other than stress, but to shut me up he took a blood sample.

By the time we arrived home from the doctor’s office, there was a message on the answering machine to call the doctor immediately because he wanted me to go to the emergency room. I called him back and he told me that I was a severe diabetic and did not have enough insulin in my body to support life! Before I could even absorb what was happening, my wife was packing an overnight bag for us and hustling me out to the car.

For the next three days we lived at the hospital; my wife sleeping on the sofa in the hospital room, keeping me company while I was a human pincushion. After three days I was well enough to be sent home, with insulin pen and blood testing equipment in hand, and strict instructions to eat a low carb breakfast and low fat lunch and supper, and orders to lose weight and use sugar substitute. It has been a very long process, and it hasn’t been fun, but I’m glad I listened to my wife when she insisted that we go to the hospital that night; if she hadn’t been persistent, I probably would have died that night!

Soups

I don’t know why I’ve had such a hard time finding beef and barley soup at the grocery store!  That’s been one of my favorite soups ever since I can remember but the last couple of years it seems to have dropped off the face of the eastern coast!  I’ve resorted to eating vegetable beef soup instead, which is a disappointment as a substitute.  Right now I’m craving a bowl of beef and barley soup, but heating up vegetable beef  instead.  My taste buds will be disappointed.  Oh well, I’ll keep looking!  On the subject of soup, I’ve noticed that in spite of all of the advertising that “soup is good food” it is way too high in sodium to be healthy.  That’s why I don’t eat much soup anymore at all, so when I crave a particular soup, I want what I want!

Air Cleaners

My sister’s family smokes a lot of cigarettes.  She keeps telling me that they are going to quit smoking, but they have been saying that for years and years.  Her youngest daughter is allergic to smoke, so they are going to look into buying some air filters for the house.

I am going to look up air cleaner ratings and see if I can give her some suggestions on which air cleaners would do the best job for them.
