What will they think of next?

Filed under: General Living, Health, Science, Shopping — Copa @ 1:20 am

I have been trying to encourage my sister-in-law Susan to quit smoking for the past several years.  She has smoked heavily for over forty years, so it is not going to be easy for her to quit.  What bothers me is that her doctor has already told her that she needs to quit smoking because her lungs are not working at their full capacity.  And her doctor has told her that the age of her lungs are about fifteen years older than her actual age.  That tells me that she is on the path to an early death.

Unfortunately, she does not seem to have much interest in quitting smoking.  Even though she has repeatedly promised her kids that she is going to quit, and even commits to a specific date, that date comes and goes and she still smokes.  It seems that every time I turn around, she is outside smoking a cigarette and talking on her cell phone.  The smoke stinks up her clothes, and stinks up the car when she sneaks a smoke in there.

I’ve been hearing a lot about the new electronic cigarette that has recently come onto the market  Although it does not advertise itself as an aid to quit smoking, what I have read about it seems to be a viable option for people who need to quit smoking but really don’t want to.  I’m going to talk to Susan about trying one and see if she would smoke one of them instead of the “real” things.  If these are really less harmful to one’s health, then I’m all for it!

Speaking of the Antarctica, I never did see the move Happy Feet! Maybe I’ll rent it from Netflix.

Finding a Specific Topic Online

Guest post from: Constance Rodgers

The internet helps with homework by making it easy for students to find a specific topic all with a few clicks of the mouse. For example, I did a research paper on animals that live in Antarctica. I was able to type in those exact words in a search engine and click go. Within seconds I found hundreds of different sites that had information about animals that live in Antarctica. I was able to get statistics, graphs, pictures, and all the information I needed for my paper. I was also able to print out images to make a nice presentation as well. All of this was easy to do using ClearTVBundle.com to go online. My research paper was a breeze to do because the information I needed was all right in front of my face. After I gathered all the information I was even able to look up how to format it. I found a research paper template that walked me through writing the paper. I was even able to check my spelling and grammar. Within a few hours my research paper was ready to be printed and handed into my teacher.

Bears in the Woods

blackbear2

Just got back in the house from walking the dogs and they were very upset during the walk. I couldn’t tell what was bothering them until we got around the back corner of our property and there was a black bear up on the edge of the woods. I only saw it for a brief moment, as the dogs barking must have scared it off. I’m rather glad that the barking didn’t agitate the bear into charging us.

It’s unusual to see a bear this close to the house. I am going to have to be more vigilant while outdoors from now on.

Math Tuneup

Math was my favorite subject in school. As soon as my Kindergarten teacher started talking about numbers, I was intrigued. All through high school and college, math was the subject that kept me interested and motivated throughout the school year.

Over all those years, I had one teacher who was not a good teacher. He probably didn’t even want to be teaching Algebra but it was his job, so he showed up every day and assigned us a lot of homework. I didn’t mind the homework, but I wish he had displayed some enthusiasm for the subject.

Thankfully, the following year, my Geometry teacher was outstanding. She explained the Acute triangle and the Isosceles triangle on the very first day of class and we hit the ground running. It was all smooth sailing after that.

Understanding a Line segment is also vital to learning and using Geometry. Kids who have a problem with the basics can at least get help online if their own parents are not a good resource for homework help. Many parents took Geometry in high school but have forgotten how to work with Indices and other critical math skills. Rather than let the kids get frustrated and develop an aversion to math, I hope their parents will try online homework help and free math tutoring for their kids.

Why

Have you ever noticed when you travel that most of the newer hotel rooms are decorated with contemporary furniture?  I’ve always like the sleek, cleanlines of modern bedroom furniture, but my wife says that she thinks that the furniture lacks character and warmth.  She’s never enjoyed the “industrial look.”

The last time we stayed in a motel room together, as we were getting ready to leave, my wife said to check under the beds to make sure that we had not accidentally pushed something under the bed.  I was surprised to see that they were platform beds. I wondered if that was done to prevent people from leaving things behind, or to save money on cleaning, or if the beds were cheaper to buy! Maybe they are easier to maintain if they have to spray for bed bugs! What do you think? Why are motels switching to them?

Health products

Sue was trying to convince me to buy some of her newly discovered healthy-trend products that she has bought recently. She knows that I have frequent stomach irritations, so she wanted me to try some of the Oregano Oil she got. She said that she bought it over the Internet, and that it is supposed to help digestive health. And she was telling me that my brother should try some of the Bio D-Mulsion that she got. She said that was full of Vitamin D, which she knew that his doctor told him to take. The last physical my hubby had resulted in the doctor telling him to take some Vitamin D, as his blood tests showed he was low on Vitamin D.

I have to admit that I am always leery of trying new vitamins and supplements. This is an unregulated industry, and who knows for sure what is really in these supplements? I know what the labels claim are in there, but I’ve heard and read and seen so many news stories over the past several years about unsanitary factories and the like that I resist taking any kind of medicine. I really try my darnedest to eat healthy, so we don’t have to take vitamins and supplements! I wish that these things were overseen by some kind of regulatory agency that would ensure the quality of the products!

Smart security guards

Now that’s what I’m talking about! Something I’ve always wanted to do!

The stress is enormous

When I was a teenager, no one I knew had even heard of teen rehab or teen addiction statistics.  Sure, we had a health class in middle school where we watched videos about the dangers of drinking and doing drugs, but it was nothing like the DARE program that so many of the schools use now.

I think it is a really sad state of affairs that we are putting so much pressure on our teenagers nowadays to study so hard to get into college, telling them that if they don’t get into a good college then their lives will be ruined.  I think that is the main reason for so much substance abuse and teen suicide!  Of course, the social media now creates more intense peer pressure, too.  Geez, life was so much simpler when I was a teenager!

At least I’m glad to know that there are teen drug rehab facilities for our struggling families.  I do think that things would be a lot easier, though, if schools focused more on dealing with stress in healthy ways instead of putting so much pressure on them to succeed.

8-9-10

This was a great story to read on Yahoo about a little girl born on the date of 8-9-10. The birth occurred at 11:12am. Too funny, right? What an easy birthday to have to remember each year. I was going to post the video about the special birthday girl but apparently there are copyright issues going on right now.

scrubs

With so many people in the medical field and the numbers growing every day there will always be a need for medical attention, no matter how bad the economy gets. A good amount of people are going back to school seeking an education in some type of the medical field. It seems that where ever I go I see someone wearing either nursing uniforms and medical scrubs and most of them are wearing the clogs that have become so popular in the last decade.

Sometimes I’ll be in a drug store and see someone wearing something that looks like a lab coat and I’ll start talking to them as if they were employed and working there, only to find to my embarrassment that they are a customer but are wearing their medical uniforms which are better known as scrubs.

I mean folks that work in a doctor’s office, or dental practice, or in a pharmacy, or in medical records or in a nursing home or in any of the numerous departments at the local hospital are sporting this attire. It is good to see that they are making a larger variety of these uniforms, with all kinds of designs and patterns which must make it easier to tolerate having to wear this type of clothing day in and day out. I’ve seen them with balloons, Micky Mouse, frogs, happy faces just to name a few.

Lessons

Recently our oldest son decided that he wanted to learn how to play the guitar.  Naturally, the places that give lessons require that the students buy musical instruments instead of loaning them out.  Fortunately for me, I still had my old acoustic guitar from when I was going through that “I want to learn to play the guitar” and I lent it to him for class.  The teacher told him that he needed a new bridge, so I took it to the local music shop where the owner repaired it for free.

He continued with the guitar lessons for only about six weeks, and then decided not to continue after that.  I sure was glad that we didn’t spend a lot of money buying him a new guitar!  And now the guitar is packed away for the next time someone decides to give it a try!

Taking Action

My favorite uncle, who is a proud Vietnam Vet, is looking for a good Mesothelioma Lawyer to help with his fight against this Mesothelioma Disease that we are hearing more and more about, especially on the TV. There has been plenty of Mesothelioma Attorney commercials on the local channels these past few years and the issue isn’t going to go away for many inflicted people.

My uncle never got over his experience in the Vietnam Police Action mentally. He spent a good amount of his time in the service under the waters in a submarine, which is where they believe he contacted this type of cancer. So by serving his country his head is all screwed up for life and now we are learning that his physical condition, which is deteriorating rapidly is due to his time over seas as well. A double whammy, if you will.

The VA has truly been wonderful. They had such a bad reputation for so very long that my uncle stayed away from anything to do with the VA hospital, but thankfully he was persuaded to give them a try, which he did, and it’s all been good, so far and I hope that they continue to take the best possible care of this special person in my family’s life.

You Want To Do What and Where?

My sister-in-law told me that just the thought of the Muslim community even thinking about building a brand new Mosque any where near “Ground Zero” in New York City makes her stomach start to scream for the injustice of the whole idea. She’s very upset to think that there is a strong possibility of this plan going through.

I, on the other hand, realize that the Muslim community has no control over the extremists who planned and carried out the terrorist attacks. I wish people would just get over this racist hatred.

IMing

It took me a while but I eventually got hooked up and started using my free Yahoo IM to chat with numerous friends and family. Now they are trying to get me to get on Face Book. My goodness, when will it ever end? Let me get comfortable on the IM and maybe one day I’ll tackle Face Book.

Today’s Options With Drug and Alcohol Issues

Today’s drug treatment and alcohol treatment center options have turned around big time in the past 15 years or so. With the economy is such a mess there is a growing need for drug rehab and alcohol rehab, not just for celebrities but for the common folk that are hurting big time with stress from finance issues. Back in the day, going into a treatment center meant going to a dirty, ugly, run down extension of some abandoned mental institute that doesn’t make for a pleasant stay during a difficult time in life while going through detox or drug or alcohol treatment.

Dr. Drew made a major impact in drug and alcohol rehab with his hit show (I think it was on VH1) that was on a few years ago concerning Celebrity Rehab and Celebrity Sober Living issues. It was an interesting series that I believe opened up a good amount of people’s eye to what is all involved in the detox and rehab process. It isn’t a pleasant sight but a necessary process that helps and needs to help so many more people that are in need in today’s wacky world.

Be careful

Filed under: Business, Family, General Living, Money and/or Finances — Copa @ 8:52 pm

Seems to me that at least once a day we get a telephone call at our house from some company that is trying to get us to sign on to their debt settlement plan.  They talk about how debt negotiation can lower our monthly payments and make our life easier.  I always think it sounds like a grand idea and turn the telephone call over to my wife.  She makes a face at me and reluctantly takes the call.

She listens politely for a few minutes and then declines their offer of their plan for our debt relief.  It always upsets me, because I want to lower our monthly payments!  So the last time one of the solicitors called, I listened on the extension to what my wife was saying to them, to see how she can justify turning down their offer.  From what I hear, the interest rates they are offering us are higher than the interest rates we are currently paying!  I was surprised to say the least!  So my advice to all of you out there is this; be careful and listen carefully.  Make sure that the offer they make you really is going to save you money!  Don’t be fooled by slick talk and pretty words!

Still having problems with Bank of America

Filed under: Business, General Living, Internet, Money and/or Finances — Copa @ 6:38 pm

Guest post by Linda Bradshaw

Well, I had had hopes that Ms. C.P. was going to help me put an end to my misery with the Bank of America mortgage problem.  She assured me that she had closed the case and that Bank of America would notify the credit agencies that the debt was settled.  Then the business of Credit Repair could begin.

That was several weeks ago, and yet so far all of the records indicat that I still owe Bank of America the mortgage money!  I’m still getting notices from Bank of America, for crying out loud!  Even their website shows I still owe them the money!  The Best Credit Repair Service in the world would not be able to help me until Bank of America finishes the job and does right by me!

I’m beginning to think that Credit Repair for me is just a pipe dream; never to happen.  Is this any way to run a business?

I know that my wife has been wanting to order one of the Howard custom computers that she’s heard about from her brother that bought one recently.  Her brother is a major computer geek, and he is always bragging about how he always buys custom computers and always has the biggest and the best.

I don’t see anything wrong with the computer that we currently have, but I wouldn’t be against supporting the idea of buying a custom laptop computer.  At least that way when we go on vacation she could keep up with the things that she feels are important so she won’t be “on edge” the whole time we were gone!

Wooly bully

Filed under: Fun, General Living — Copa @ 6:29 pm

This morning I was listening to the music channel on television and the song Wooly Bully came on. Before I knew it my wife grabbed me up and we were dancing in the kitchen! Boy did that song take me back to my teenaged years!

Oh, for the good ol’ days!

Security issues

When we lived in New England, I had a video security system hooked up at the shop.  Since the shop was left unattended for hours at a time, Iwanted to be able to see who was on the property in the event anything turned up missing or vandalized!  I had a lot of expensive equipment on the grounds, and expensive tools and equipment inside.

Before I bought that system, I asked Joe for some tips about what kind of system he liked the best. He’s had several different systems in the past, and I trusted his judgement.

Joe actually gave me one of his used systems that he didn’t need anymore, and he helped me with the installation of the system too. When we moved down here and sold that shop building, I brought the system with me. I haven’t hooked it up yet; I haven’t decided whether to hook it up to the house or to the storage shed out back!

A new snack

I decided to give my wife a break today and do the grocery shopping. I decided to go to Wal-Mart because we needed pet food, and that is the cheapest place for us to get the Iams brand cat food that we need.

There was a demo booth there with a lady handing out samples of the new Bugles Caramel chips. They were delicious! I bought two bags of them; only one of the bags made its way home! If you can find them in your store, give them a try! They were only $1.67 a bag at Wal-Mart – don’t pay more at someplace more expensive!

Money for college

I guess now thatall of our kids have graduated college, our younger siblings have been asking for advice from us about how to get money for their kids to go to college.

Unfortunately for them, there seems to be more money available for the minority races through minority scholarships than through “regular” college scholarships!  I know that for a fact myself because I was looking around for some college grants for my wife to go back to college and get a pharmacist’s degree!

As smart as my wife is, we will never be able to afford for her to go back to college – we depend too much on her income to survive.  We’d never be able to survive while she was in school.

One word of advice I’d like to give people – go to college BEFORE you get get married and have children!  It is so much easier when you are not bound to a specific location and have to support a family!

Starting a business

Filed under: Business, General Living, Money and/or Finances — Copa @ 5:30 pm

One good way to start a new business is to find a good franchise for sale and buy one for your area.  Often times buying a franchise is a great way to become your own boss and own your own company, without having to invest quite so much elbow grease and money.  I always have envied those people who have their own Burger King or Ruby Tuesday or Applebee’s franchise!  I’d love to own a Longhorn Steakhouse or a Bob Evans!

When someone buys into a franchise, they tap into the power of an established business that is set up to help train them for success.  They also have the advertising power of a large national corporation, so their advertising budget tends to be lower than starting a business from scratch.  And as we all know, advertising a business is very important, and very expensive!

Tee Times At A Glance

Filed under: Family, Fun, General Living, Hobbies, Internet — Copa @ 9:23 pm

I come from a family of avid golfers. Every one in the family enjoys a good game of golf from time to time, it was a good quality sport for the whole family to enjoy together. We were started out pretty young, around the age of 3 or 4 depending on the kid and their comfort level and skills. To hear the words tee times would get the whole house in an uproar, the excitement was very contagious, and it still is to this day.

Even though the family have spread out a whole lot, all across the country, we still manage to get together now and then and enjoy a family game of golf. I found a great site www.48hourteetimes.com that allows you to book games at short notice and in various areas. Our favorite golf courses are in Myrtle Beach, the North Myrtle Beach area to be exact. You can’t ask for much more than what Myrtle Beach as to offer, something for everyone can be found there!

Sometimes the opportunity to get in a game comes up out of no where and if you don’t jump on it, it can leave as quickly as it came. So a site that helps you with 48 hour tee times would certainly be helpful, another example of how the Internet has made life so much easier.

Rain Chains

With the serious lack of rain that we have been dealing with this year, it is good to see that people are doing what they can to help conserve our precious rain waters. Rain barrels are coming back in a large variety of styles and prices, which I think is a great way to help out. We used to have several rain barrels in our back yard, back in the day, but they were the standard wooden ones, not much to look at, but they did the trick.

I was online last night and stumbled across a site that is selling rain chains. I really like the idea and looks of these rain chain items. They have a wide variety of these very affordable chains rain and their accessories. I have to tell you that I’ve never seen one before, maybe I am behind in the times, but I’d like to get the word out about this products and see more people investing in them. So if you could take the time to visit rainchainlink.com and see what they are all about and all that they have to offer I’d appreciate it. It can be easy being “green” no matter what Kermit The Frog says. LOL!

They say they’ve closed the case

Filed under: Business, Family, General Living — Copa @ 9:31 pm

The mortgage company tells me that they’ve closed my case on the deed-in-lieu for my house in New England, and that they would fix my credit score by notifying the three credit agencies that the mortgage is no longer overdue.  I’ve been quite upset over the past almost three years now because I couldn’t keep up the house payments after I had my accident.  We tried repeatedly to get some assistance and cooperation from them but they have not been helpful at all.

And because of their poor handling of the situation, my credit report has suffered big time.  It will take years to build my credit back up to where it used to be.  This accident I was in has caused me grief on so many different levels!  I don’t think that my life will ever be the same again.  We still haven’t seen any insurance money yet!
