Ski holidays in Whistler

Sometimes I feel melancholy when I hear about the great adventures Jason is currently having, or planning. Don’t get me wrong, I’m really glad that he is having a great time with his life; he’s a good young man and deserves the best of everything. But when he came home for a short visit and raved about plans for his next trip it was a bittersweet feeling. He is planning to go with his ski club friends on a ski trip to Canada.

At first they weren’t sure which ski resort to go to, but they seem to have found some bargain priced Ski holidays in Whistler and are planning to take advantage of it. Jason told me that he went online and found some discount whistler lift passes that they could buy and now all they have to do is choose which ski accommodation in Whistler   package they want to buy.

Looking at the website Jason showed me about Whistler, I was reminded that Whistler was the site of the Winter Olympics in 2010. What a fantastic trip it would be to go there! I’m wishing that I was young and fit as a fiddle again so I could go skiing with him. What a great time he will have with his ski club when they go there!

Out of place

When Regina invited us to attend a social mixer that she was hostessing near her office, we thought that would be a good way to get to know some of her friends and co-workers. So we agreed, and decided to make a night of it by going out to eat at Longhorn’s first. We both love their Flo’s filet and we happened to have a coupon to make the dinner less expensive.

Once we got to the mixer, Regina was thrilled to see us. She brought us right in and introduced us to her new boyfriend, Daniel. Daniel seemed like a very likable fellow, and we talked small-talk for a while (How ’bout the Giants beating the Patriots?) and then the talk turned to careers. Seems that Daniel is in chemical investment banking. He works for a firm that specializes in giving advice to investors about chemical mergers and acquisitions. We exchanged business cards, and he was very interested to hear about my truck that I’m restoring, so we talked about that for a while.

He took us around the room and introduced us to some of the other people there and made sure that we felt at ease. He was a good co-host with Regina; without him there I think we would have felt really out-of-place at the mixer full of financial advisers.

Birthday celebration

Unfortunately it rained all day on my birthday, which meant that I was laid up in bed in pain all day long. I really hate rainy days. My wife got me to come out of the bedroom long enough to open my birthday cards and some gifts, but I wasn’t in the mood to eat dinner or even cake and ice cream. If I’m not in the mood for ice cream, then I must really be in pain!

My wife was a real sweetheart and got me a Kindle for my birthday. She knew that it has been hurting my hands to have to hold books and turn the pages over the past several months, and she thought that using a Kindle to read it would be easier for me to turn pages. She was right, it does. I am very pleased with the Kindle. And I know my wife is going to be happy that I don’t keep adding more and more books to our already over-loaded bookcases! Personally I just think that she just wants more room for HER cookbooks!

Good bye Whitney

Back in the late 80′ my wife and I purchased an album by Whitney Houston. We LOVED that album. The album got a lot of play on it. I know that people have said that her voice had deteriorated in more recent years due to her self-destructive lifestyle. That was very sad. Even sadder is her untimely premature death. She was a great singer.

Did you watch the Grammys

Last night my wife and I watched the Grammy’s together. We don’t normally watch award shows of any kind; normally we are in bed asleep pretty early. But for some reason we managed to stay awake and watch the show. We were sure glad that we were not the judges in these shows – there were some awesome songs competing with each other. One of my favorite songs that didn’t get an award was the song “Grenade” by Bruno Mars. Of course the song that did win was awesome, too, and I can’t say that it did not deserve to win – there were a lot of really good songs.

My wife and I both enjoyed the performance by Taylor Swift, where she sang the song “mean.” The lyrics reminded both of us of some people in our lives that are gone now, but that really were just plain mean. Looks like Taylor got the last laugh on her “mean” folks, didn’t she! Some of fashions people wore to the show were really ugly. Downright ugly. Makes me wonder just what they were thinking when they put those clothes on.
