Both my wife and I were quite surprised when we moved down here to discover that the children in school here do not get their own Apple laptop issued to them by the schools. It’s been quite a long time now since the state of Maine had struck a bargain with Apple to be able to give Apple laptops to every incoming 7th grade student and let them keep the laptop all the way through high school. If I recall correctly the students did not even have to pay anything for them. Of course they probably had to buy their own replacement Apple Laptop Battery if theirs ever went dead, but that is a small price to pay for being given a free laptop to do your schoolwork with!

When I tell people down here about that laptop program for the kids in Maine I’m told that the kids down here don’t need them because there are plenty of computers in the school already. That’s all well and good, but the laptops were taken to and from home so that the kids did not have to lug tons of textbooks home, and they could do their homework on their laptops. Many kids around here are from families that cannot afford to have a computer at home for the kids to work on. So I think that as much as people like to think that this is a progressive state, I have to disagree on that point.

When we lived in New England, there were several years when the electric company offered to send a team of home energy auditors out to their customers homes to check out the nooks and crannies and see where energy efficiency could be improved. Every month they included flyers with home energy efficiency tips along with the customer statement. They even included coupons for savings on energy efficient appliances and insulation.

When living in a northern state such as that, every tip and trick and coupon that helps keep energy costs down is a big deal. And the demand for home insulation contractors is amazing; when we called around to try to arrange for some estimates on having more insulation put in the attic we were told that we would have to wait for six months!

Guest post by Dianna Campbell

One thing is for sure, many more people are staying put in their homes instead of trying to sell their homes and buy new ones. The entire global economy is so uncertain right now that the general feeling here in Toronto is that it is better to hire some toronto contractors to update your existing house than it is to risk losing money in the real estate market of trying to sell it and then not being able to get out from under it.

I can remember when my hubby and I decided that we wanted to have some renovations toronto done to our house – we wanted to raise the roof and add on three bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs and then remodel the kitchen. We found some really fantastic toronto kitchen contractors that made the cabinets by hand. They took a fairly long time to complete the cabinets, but they were totally awesome and we were the envy of the neighborhood when the kitchen was finished.

When I moved out of that house it broke my heart to leave that kitchen behind.

My wife has decided to create her own website in an attempt to assist her in recruiting new sales agents to join her team. She has been trying to think of great ways to help people who are looking for jobs in Warrenton or jobs in Culpeper find her. She is reluctant to place an ad in the newspaper, but she may end up doing that down the road. So far she has been printing flyers and spreading them around town, taking them to places that she knows has bulletin boards and tacking them up. She also went to the local homeless shelter and gave them a lot of flyers to put on their bulletin boards as well.

Yesterday she went into the local Blockbusters video store that is closing and gave them some flyers. She even pulled off of the road when she saw someone dressed in costume holding up a sign that was advertising a tax preparation company and gave him a flyer!

I told her to give me a bunch of flyers and I’d help to distribute them too.
