I have to wonder

When I go online I frequently find advertisements that are encouraging people to return to school in order to get better jobs. there are frequent stories about what jobs will be in the most demand in the near future.

Many of the stories indicate that health fields are always going to be growing especially since the baby boom generation is aging. That would make sense except that with all this talk about how the government might be reducing Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid benefits I have to wonder if there’s really going to be that much demand since people won’t be able to afford to pay for the medical services.

Regardless it’s nice to know that there are companies still awarding grants for physical therapy students and other medical fields. I’d like to think that people will still be able to afford medical care during my lifetime.

If the country is going to be trying to increase in employment through fixing the countries infrastructure, then going after engineering grants to get a degree in civil engineering would also be a smart idea because we almost always have demand for engineers around here,

Elder abuse

I find all the rhetoric that I’m hearing on television lately about how raising taxes on the country’s wealthiest citizens is paramount to class warfare a lot of hooey. My understanding of class warfare is when you make living conditions impossible for survival. From what I’ve been hearing, proposals on tax increases are simply to bring the taxes that go up to the level that they were when the Clintons were in the white house.

When the Clintons were in the White House I did not hear of any wealthy citizens being taxed to the point where they could not survive. The suggestion that entitlements be cut for the elderly and disabled is unconscionable. Reducing the benefits that go to the country’s truly needy should not even be on the bargaining table.

Daycare is very expensive

One of the sad truths about society here is that the pay rate of day care workers are low and yet the parents that send their kids to day care cannot afford to pay the expensive prices of day care! My niece has been trying to  re-enter the job force and my wife and I have been trying to help her to find affordable child care for her two year old daughter.

The search reminds me of when our own kids were very young and we had to send them to child care while we worked.  One of the things that we considered was whether or not the center had individual kids lockers for the enrolled children. We wanted to make certain that the childrens lockers were assigned to each child so that their possessions would not get misplaced. We even ended up buying a second hand set of lockers for kids for the day care center that we chose so that each child had his or her own space.

Where is the foliage?

My wife and I went to eat lunch at one of our favorite local restaurants this afternoon. We had received a coupon in the meal good for $9.00 off one meal, and we decided to take advantage of it today. We also had to stop at the pharmacy to pick up a prescription and at the grocery store to pick up some hamburger rolls and bananas, so we were combining errands into the trip (made us feel less guilty about driving into town just for a meal!)

As we were driving home we were noticing how many trees were already starting to drop their leaves. The colors don’t seem to have changed yet (much) but the leaves are dropping. It surprised me to see so many leaves on the road and the ground without having seen much color, but there it was. I wonder why the color doesn’t seem to be changing? I wonder if that is a sign of too much rain, or not enough rain.  One way or another, however, it is a sure sign that autumn is approaching, and winter won’t be far behind!

Internet and business

Lately at the Wednesday morning networking meetings that my wife and I attend there appears to be a lot of new people that say that their business is providing affordable seo services to local businesses. I find it very interesting that when my wife approaches them about providing her blogging services that they have a tendency to look down their noses at her.

I guess when she does that perhaps they view her as a competitor rather than a contributing partner. I do wonder how successful these people are in their businesses there certainly appears to be a lot of competition in that market. One thing is for sure, I’m really glad that I am not involved in trying to start a company that would be in need of that kind of financial investment in the area of marketing. Sometimes it’s good to be retired!
