Service with no smile

So on our way home, we stopped at Wendy’s to grab a bite to eat. It was after the lunch rush, so I don’t understand what the problem was specifically, but it seemed as if that Wendy’s was having a difficult day. I don’t think that it’s a full moon, is it?

Anyway, the man who was taking our order, well I suspect that he was in some kind of physical pain. I think I saw a pain patch peeking out from the back of his collar. This poor guy didn’t seem to understand our order, and we had to repeat it several times before he got it right. I noticed that the same thing held true for the customer after us, too. This cashier never smiled, never said please or thank you. In the fast food chain wars I was pretty sure that the restaurants are trying to “hype up” the “smiling faces” part of business advertising!

When we got the order, the food was not as we requested. I had ordered my burger with no onions, but there were onions just the same. That’s always an aggravation to me; I don’t feel that I should have to inspect and pick apart my burger – if I order it with no onions, then it should be no onions! So on this day and location, the service was less than satisfactory. That’s really too bad since my wife and I don’t have the money to eat out very often, so when we DO eat out we want it to be pleasant!

Community spaces

When my wife and I left Staples, we decided to take the scenic route through town to come home.  With all of the flowering shrubs and trees in full bloom, the town is just about the prettiest sight you’d ever care to see.  Since my wife knew a lot of back roads that I’ve never been on, I just sat back and watched the scenery.

We wound our way past several small apartment complexes that had outdoor Cluster Mailboxes by the side of the road that caught my attention.  I was thinking about how it was convenient for the post office to have CBU Mailboxes by the road like that, but from the perspective of the residents of the complexes, I would think that the residents would prefer to have their Apartment Mailboxes inside the building that they live in.

I wondered if the town had special policies that the complexes had to follow when purchasing the Commercial Mailboxes for the complexes that required them to be outside.  I can’t imagine wanting to park my car in the parking lot and then have to run across the parking lot in bad weather!  I think that might even be a deal breaker for me.  When I was first out on my own, in my first apartment, the mailboxes were in the foyer of the building.  I liked that a lot!

Good eye for bargains

My wife got a notice in the mail from Staples that if she went to the store and bought up to two packages of AA or AAA 20 count Duracell coppertop batteries that she would get 100% of the cost back on the Rewards check that gets sent out from time to time. My wife LOVED that bargain! The offer expires at the end of the week, and as it happened we had errands that we needed to run into town, to a store right beside Staples! So it only took her a couple of minutes to duck into Staples and get those batteries!

We use a lot of AA batteries, so I’m really happy that we ended up with 40 free batteries! Can’t beat that deal with a stick!

Saving money

Since I’ve become disabled and unable to work, my wife and I have been looking for every possible way to save money.  One of the ways we’ve found is to buy cheap ink for our older Lexmark printer.  We’ve had this printer for about ten years now, so it is WAY out of warranty.  (And by the way that is a great testimony for Lexmark printers durability!)

It wasn’t until I started staying home and getting involved in the local community service organizations that I realized just how much name brand inkjet cartridges cost.  I was using our printer a lot to make copies of raffle tickets, and spaghetti dinner fund raising announcements and I was just having a grand ol’ time until my wife told me that I was using up all of “her” printer ink and she was getting tired of paying for new ink several times a month.  She told me it was high time that the organizations bought her some replacement ink cartridges.

Thankfully we found a source for cheap ink at inkgrabber.com – and we can save about 75% of the cost of ink for our printer!  What a bargain!

Have to wonder

Last year we planted two young peach trees in our front yard. They were only about thirty feet from each other, and each one was cared for equally. This spring one of them was dead, the other was just fine. Things like this make me wonder why one died off. I never saw any damage to it, so I don’t think it was pests that killed it.

I wonder what it fell victim to. Are peach trees that tender that it’s a miracle that one survived? Makes me wonder if I should even bother to buy a replacement peach tree, or if I should buy something different. I wonder if I should buy the replacement from a local nursery and pay them to plant it so I get a warranty on it. I hate to spend that much money, but then again I don’t want to waste my money buying stuff that dies within a year! Very strange.
