My wife has been encouraging me to consider investing in gold when we get our insurance settlement money. She seems to think that putting some of our money in gold would be a good hedge against the stock market dropping again. I have to admit that I have always considered gold as a suspect when it came to investing money. I know that the price of gold can fluctuate too.
But my wife keeps telling me that investing in gold as a way to diversify our portfolio is a sound decision. She keeps telling me that it is never wise to put all of your eggs in the same basket, and that we need to spread our money out so that if one investment does poorly then the other might take up the slack and do well. I have to admit that there is a lot of logic in that reasoning. Diversification is a good way to protect ourselves financially.
Well, we got about twenty inches of snow from the storm. I went out side yesterday while it was still snowing to use the snow blower a little bit. Years of life in New England taught me that it is a good idea to get a start on these big storms. If you try to clear a huge amount of snow the snow blower just might not like it very much and break down on you, and then you are in trouble! So you start before it gets too much and you’re good. My sister-in-law decided to come out and play in the snow while I was clearing the walk-way. She borrowed my wife’s boots and snow pants and had herself a grand old time. She’s not used to seeing that much snow and she was having some fun! My wife, on the other hand, well, let’s just say she has had her share of playing in the snow.
My wife cautioned her sister to NOT throw snowballs at me – she said “don’t mess with the guy armed with a snowblower!” Well, as you can imagine, somehow a snowball hit me in the back of the head. I turned around and the only one in sight was laughing her butt off! Laughter turned to shrieks as I turned the chute of the snowblower and showered the assailant with a ton of show! She should have listened to my wife!
One of the things that have prevented me from buying stocks in the past was the fact that many people look down their noses at folks who don’t have a strong basic knowledge of the nuts and bolts of Stock Trading. I really don’t like to ask a lot of questions of people who have a “superior attitude.” I’m pretty sure you know what I mean. That’s the biggest reason why I prefer to have an Online Broker. I don’t have to see their faces or listen to their “I’m smarter than you are” tones of voice.
With Online Trading I can get the information that I need and spend as much time as I need thinking about my choices. I don’t feel that “hurry up and make a decision” pressure that a live person sitting in front of me can emit. That kind of hard sell just turns me off! I like to gather all of the facts and discuss the decisions with my wife without someone else in the conversation trying to influence my decision. My wife says that makes me a “control freak.” Maybe she’s right, but it is MY money after all!
