Bratz and Barbie

I have been hearing and reading about the lawsuit between Mattel and MGA over the Bratz and Barbie issue. Mattel claimed that the designer of the Bratz doll had designed the Bratz doll while employed by Mattel, thereby making it Mattel’s intellectual property. The court agreed and ordered that Bratz be pulled from the shelves at the beginning of this year. I was just reading that the courts have granted a reprieve so that the dolls can continue to be sold throughout 2009. Well, that’s good news on a variety of levels, it’s a shame to think of so many popular dolls being thrown away - think about pollution people!

As for intellectual property, I think that if I was working for a company and came up with an idea in the middle of night, like a “Eureka” moment waking me from the sleep, I would not want to “give” that idea to my boss for them to make millions of dollars. I think this “intellectual property” rule is immoral and just plain wrong.
