Trying to lose weight

Filed under: Business, Family, Food, General Living, Health, Shopping, Technology and Gadgets — Copa @ 12:30 pm

I am interested in finding a good weight loss program.  It seems that every time I go to the doctor’s office they weigh me and I’ve gained weight.  I think that the insulin that the doctor put me on for my diabetes is responsible for some of the weight gain; I’ve tried hard to lose weight by eating less high calorie foods and eating more salads.

My wife told me to go to the Internet and look at the Weight Loss Diet Help website.  It reviews many of the commercial weight loss programs that are available to today’s consumer.  It lists and compares the features and costs of the different programs, and it provides links that lead you to offers of discount coupons and offers to many of the programs.  The diets I’ve already heard about are the South Beach Diet, Medifast, Nutrisystem and WeightWatchers.  They also talk about a couple of diets that I’ve never heard of before.

What I found even more interesting about the website was that it had several interesting articles about the subject – it had an article about healthy weight loss and an article about the benefits of gym workouts that I found most informative.

My tractor has a flat tire

Filed under: Cars/Motorcycles/Trucks, Family, Garden, General Living, Hobbies — Copa @ 12:06 pm

Oh man, I am so bummed out!  My John Deere tractor has a flat tire!  Not just the inner tube, the tire.  I need to replace them both.  My wife is the one who told me the tire was flat, and I didn’t believe her at first.  I thought she was trying to play a bad joke on me.  But when I looked out the window, sure enough the tire was flat!  I went out and put air in the tire and it deflated within minutes right before my very eyes.  I was fit to be tied!  It is not repairable, I am going to have to buy a new one.  It is going to cost over $500!  I am very upset about that, believe you me!  I did not have $500 in my budget for something like that!

Electronics for boats

My mother and father-in-law live on a river’s inlet.  They have several boats and they like to invite company to their place frequently for boat rides.  The last time we went to see them we were talking about the many types of boating navigation  and marine electronics tools there are on the market nowadays.  We were interested to find out that there are GPS units specifically geared towards boating use, with charts of the rivers in place of the roads we are used to seeing on our automobile GPS unit.  I think that is really a great development, especially since my in-laws are getting older and more likely to get lost while they are out riding in their boat!  The Internet company bigtsports.com sells a variety of boating navigation tools, as well as a variety of outdoor electronics.  I went to their website and was surprised to see how many different types of electronics there are that are directed towards the boater.

Dug out my Harley today

Filed under: Cars/Motorcycles/Trucks, Fun, General Living, Shopping, Travel — Copa @ 4:04 pm

Well, winter is over, spring is here, time to definitely go for a ride on my Harley!  It’s a beautiful thing, it ought to be!  Cost a small fortune, but worth every penny!  It fired right up, I drove it outside and let it warm up.  I looked it all over, threw on my helmet and off I went!  Boy did it feel good!  I can’t describe the feeling as I shifted through the gears, going down the road!  I pulled up to a stop sign, slid it back into first gear, and off I went again!  This was one of those days were I didn’t mind stopping at a stop sign every couple of miles because I love to shift through the gears!  I love to hear the sound of my exhaust!  I love the fresh air on my face, heck I love it all!  I drove about fifteen miles, making a loop back to my house, I figured that was good enough for today because I know there will be many more rides!

Cooking with “the real stuff”

When my wife bakes her world famous (alright, family famous!) cakes, she uses only the finest Icumsa 45 grade sugar that she can buy.  That grade of sugar is the highest grade refined sugar made.  She was telling me the other day that sugar is made not just from sugar cane, but also from sugar beets!  I didn’t believe her, so I went on the Internet and did some research on it.  Well, she is right, sugar IS made from both cane AND beets!  The finest sugar is made in Brazil, and I was reading about the process – I thought it was fascinating!

Bug light time

Unbelievably, it’s time to change all the outdoor light bulbs from white to yellow.  I do this every year; the yellow lights keep the bugs away whereas the white lights attract all the bugs.  It seems like we got a dozen, but we really only five or six.  It surely is an ingenious thing that they thought of, the mosquitoes and the moths and all kinds of flying insects seem to be highly attracted to the white light.  The yellow lights really deter them, so today I went out and changed all the bulbs.  So tonight, or whatever other night I’m out, when I come home there will be very few bugs flying around ready to come in the house.  It doesn’t take very long, and it makes my wife happy.

Dealing with fireants

Filed under: Garden, General Living, Health, Internet, Shopping, Technology and Gadgets — Copa @ 7:25 pm

It seems as if the fireants are slowly moving northward. Probably a result of global warming! I understand that fire ant bites are very painful and can kill some people! I found a website, www.controlfireants.com that has a lot of information about dealing with fireants. I’m going to save it in my “favorites” folder so that if I see any of those nasty fireants around my house, I’ll be able to look it up quickly and deal with them before they deal with me!

Fireants

Fireants are moving into Virginia.  I was surprised to hear that, I didn’t think they were this far north!  I can remember seeing fireant nests lining the roadside the last time we went to Florida, and I thought “boy I am sure am glad we don’t have to deal with those nasty things!”

I love trivia

Trivia has always been a passion for me.  The more useless the information, the better!  I love it when people are talking about some subject and I can join the conversation with some little-known fact related to what they are talking about!  The look on their faces is priceless!

I’ve just found out about a cool game site on the Internet at www.triviamania.com where I can pit my trivia knowledge against other online players.  There are two versions to play, for free, or for real money.  I’m definitely going to try it out – I bet I can win some real big $$$$$!

Energy saving light bulbs (not so great!)

Filed under: Business, General Living, Home Improvement, Shopping — Copa @ 7:29 pm

You know we all read about and hear about how great these new lightbulbs are and how they save lots of energy and save you lots of money.  Well, I did a little research on these and I found out that yes, they do save you energy, but they are just like thermometers, batteries, and other such things.  They all have mercury in them.  And they have to be disposed of in a certain way.  This all costs money, so to me, in the long run, those light bulbs – you might get an extra year out of, and you might save some energy, but if you dispose of them legally they might cost you money, so the next time you buy an energy saving light bulb, think twice about it!

My buddy is balding

Filed under: Business, Food, Friends, General Living, Health, Shopping — Copa @ 6:10 pm

My buddy from work Ben came over for a short visit this past weekend, joined us for some burgers that I was cooking on the grill. He told us that he just started a regimen this week of a hair loss product called Procerin.  He told us that Procerin is available in topical ointment and tablet form, and is available without a prescription.  It is made from natural vitamins, herbs, and minerals, and works by inhibiting the hormone transformations that cause hair loss.

He says he ordered a 90 day supply over the Internet at www.procerin.com, and that the company offers a 90 day money-back guarantee.

Fishing in the area

Filed under: Friends, Fun, General Living, Hobbies, Sports, Travel — Copa @ 6:03 pm

Two years ago I moved south roughly 700 miles.  I like to fish and a couple of places that I tried weren’t that great.  I finally found out I was fishing in the wrong area.  My buddy said you have to go to this certain place to fish, and you have to use these certain bait and lures.  Then you should have good luck.  I haven’t been to these areas yet, but I’ve heard from other people that this is where the fish are!  I’m the type of person that likes to catch and release, so hopefully this will be the place to go!

Daughter wants a new credit card

My daughter called me over the weekend and was talking to me about how she wants to get a new credit card.  She already has a couple of cards, but she doesn’t get any kind of rewards for using them.  She is very interested in getting a card that gives her rewards, with no annual fees, and a low interest rate.  I suggested that she check out the website http://creditcardsclub.com.  That website has a listing of the many different cards that are available, and has a short written review on each one, describing the interest rate, the rewards (or lack thereof,) and annual fees.  There are also several different interesting articles on the site about safeguarding your credit, repairing bad credit, and how to avoid scams of fake credit repair companies.

I personally like the DiscoverCard rewards cards, but not all businesses accept DiscoverCards, so it is my opinion that it is a good idea to also have a MasterCard or Visa on hand.  I told her that if she ends up talking to a service representative on the phone about the cards she is interested in apply to get to be very cautious to ask very specific questions regarding the limitations on the rewards.  Some of the cards get very tricky!

New seat for John Deere

Filed under: Garden, General Living, Hobbies, Home Improvement — Copa @ 8:53 am

I need a new seat for my John Deere.  It’s really funny because my John Deere has a backhoe on the back with a separate seat.  I have used the tractor more for digging holes than I have for anything else.  No doubt I’ve moved mulch, loam, garbage, snow, but mostly I was digging graves, or digging holes for trees and shrubs.  Naturally the seat started coming apart after the warranty was over – right after!  Isn’t that always the way!?

So I started pricing out seats.  I went to the John Deere place of course.  After talking to the parts counter I felt I could buy a new tractor for the price of a new seat!  So I went to alternative sites such as JC Whitney, Northern Machinery, companies like that that sell seats.  I found one for about 1/2 the price.  I have to alter the bracket to make the seat fit but that’s nothing for me!  And the seat looks exactly the same!  So I will be putting that on my tractor!  I might even put a cover over the seat to make it last even longer.  I got 8 years out of the first one; by not covering it, so maybe I’ll get a few more years beyond that with a cover.

Want to visit my brother-in-laws house

Filed under: Computers, General Living, Home Improvement, Internet, Shopping — Copa @ 6:49 pm

My wife and I have been bugging my brother-in-law for an invite to his house.  He finally confided that he had the cat urine odor problem and asked my wife for advice, knowing that she is “an animal person.”   She told him to buy a black light to find the cat urine, and to use one of the many cat urine removers products that are available for sale at ww.qualitycatresources.com.

My brother-in-law’s cat problem

Filed under: Family, General Living — Copa @ 6:44 pm

Recently my brother-in-law moved to a new home.  When he moved, he brought his cat with him, not realizing that cats don’t move very well.  He had owned the cat for a long time and had spent a lot of money on it over the years at the vet, and felt it was appropriate to bring the cat.  Well, apparently the cat disagreed because the cat has been spraying all of the walls in the new house, making the home very stinky!

Dressing up

Filed under: Computers, General Living, Internet, Shopping, Technology and Gadgets — Copa @ 5:08 pm

I really enjoy dressing up in my good clothes to go to a meeting or out to a fancy restaurant.  So I’m really glad to have started joining some clubs that have fancy functions to go to from time to time!  I want to buy a pair of crocodile skin shoes to wear to the next fancy function.  I’ve found a great discount menswear website called Upscale Menswear that sells genuine crocodile shoes, and they have a really great selection to choose from.  I think the black wing tip shoes would look the best with the suits that I have, and the price is right!

Upscale Menswear also sells high quality suits, dress shirts, casual shirts and suits and fur coats.  Some of the selection is really classic, some is really wild!

Black fence

Filed under: General Living, Local — Copa @ 4:55 pm

I have never seen so much black fence in my life!  Everywhere I go, there is black fence; three tier.  I know this is horse country (and cattle) although I have seen a lot of sheep.  They’re really cute!  But miles and miles and miles of black fence!

My wife says that she seems to remember a time when the fences around the farms were white instead of black, and to be honest, we do see a few of them, and most of them DO look older.  I wonder why the farmers decided to switch to black?  My wife thinks maybe it is because the white ones get dirty looking quicker, maybe the black ones are easier to maintain, or maybe the black ones are made out of a cheaper but better longer lasting material.  I guess that is one question I’ll never have the answer to!

Cases for iphones

One of the biggest problems I’ve heard iphone owners complain about is how beat up and scratched up the iphones get in a relatively short period of time.  Most people seem to need to get some kind of protective iphone case to keep the iphone scratch free.

ZAGG’s invisibleSHIELD™ is a practically indestructible iphone case that is made from a material that was developed by and used by the military.  The military used it on helicopter blades to protect them from dust, debris, and dirt.  The case is very thin, only .2mm thick.  The case comes with a lifetime warranty against scratches and wear.  This product sounds like the answer to the problem of iphone scratches!

Jealous dogs

Filed under: Family, General Living — Copa @ 4:40 pm

A while back our dog died.  We’ve always had a dog; so my wife, after sobbing for a couple of weeks decided to go out and adopt a dog instead of buying one.  I thought it was a great idea.  I didn’t think it was going to be quite like adopting a baby; the dog was old but still full of spunk!  It settled in nicely, even when we moved to another state it adapted well.  Well, a funny thing happened!  We acquired another dog, which was basically a baby.  And apparently it didn’t have much love before he came to us, and we love our pets equally.

Well, it was a funny thing, the more we loved up the new dog the more the old dog came around and tried to intercede and be loved up as much.  Usually she just lays there and wags her tail and smiles.  Now, no matter what, whenever I play with one dog, the other one is right there.  And I mean RIGHT THERE!  One dog is jumping up on the other and trying to get the person to pay more attention to the other.  To me, that is just pure jealousy!  But I guess it’s good, it tells me they both love being where they are!

I love the movies

Filed under: Business, Family, Fun, General Living, Hobbies, Movies, Shopping — Copa @ 5:41 pm

I’m really excited about the upcoming movies that will be playing in the local theaters this summer. I’ve already seen Ironman, it was terrific. I’ve been a long time fan of the comics, and I went to see the movie with my step-son who only knows a little bit about Ironman. We both left the theater with the same impression; it was an awesome movie with plenty to offer for hard core and casual fans alike.
Indiana Jones is coming soon – I can’t wait! I have all of the Indiana Jones movies on DVD, and watch them frequently. I know I’ll love this next movie, and I’m sure I’ll be buying the DVD when it is released, too!
My wife and step-son want to see Narnia, it was released this weekend. I’ll probably take them to see it and tell them I’m only doing it to make them happy (trying to win brownie points) but I want to see it just as badly as they want to see it!
The Incredible Hulk sequel is coming out in about a month. I was personally disappointed in the original; however the sequel looks like it might more interesting. My step-son and I will probably go see that one.
I heard that the Sex in the City movie is coming out this summer too. None of us have ever seen the TV show, I don’t know if we will want to see the movie or not. I know it was a popular TV show, but with the price of gasoline, and the rotten economy, we might just wait for this to come out on DVD and rent it.

I’d like to buy a few of the movie posters that are for sale on the website http://www.postergods.com/movies-posters.html.  They have a great selection of prints and posters for these, and a lot of other movies for sale at that website.  They will give free shipping within the US if given the discount code BBM8.

Need to replace shrubs

Filed under: Business, Garden, General Living — Copa @ 5:10 pm

Last summer I planted eighteen shrubs in a row.  Unfortunately a dozen of them had to sit in the hot sun for about a week before I could get to them.  I kept them watered but they really should have been put in the ground with mulch around them.  In the past, by keeping them watered I never had a problem.  So I finally got them planted.  This spring I noticed six of them were really dead.  Two others didn’t look very good either.

I called the nursery; they asked me a bunch of questions (as usual) I sort of faked it and they told me to bring back all of the old shrubs that didn’t make it and they would replace them.  That’s pretty nice of them!  So this weekend I will replace the old shrubs with new ones, then my line of shrubs will look great.  I’m glad because the neighbor stopped over last year when I was planting them and thought they really looked great.  It was funny how he was so quick to mention that some of them were dying this year.  Unbelievable!  His don’t look that great!

Bathroom visits

Filed under: Business, General Living, Health, Shopping — Copa @ 5:11 am

I have been seeing a lot of infomercials about Colon Cleansing products over the past few months; it makes me wonder exactly how many people really believe that you need to completely empty your intestines every day to be healthy?  From all the commercials I see, they are either extremely successful selling their product, or are desperate!

My understanding is that it is normal for your intestines to have some solids in them all of the time; it is just part of nature.  I can’t imagine using any kind of product on a regular basis to keep my intestines empty all the time!  I think that is just carrying things too far!  I don’t think it can possibly be as healthy as the infomercials are claiming it is!

There have been times when I need a laxative, I’ll admit that.  But on the other hand, my wife has irritable bowel syndrome and she already is in the bathroom more than she wants to be; I think a colon cleansing regimen would kill her!

My in-laws have recently joined a health program where they are trying to eat only vegetables, and they have been talking to us about how important their program thinks colon cleansing is.  I still think they are a little bit nuts!

Cereal cereal cereal

Filed under: Business, Food, General Living, Health, Shopping — Copa @ 5:02 am

I have never seen so many types of cereal lined up on the shelf in my entire life!  I know there is a lot of cereal in the store when you walk down the aisles, but I never thought much about it.  Then I went to work in a grocery store (another story.)  One of my jobs was to stock the cereal aisle.  I never realized they categorize the cereal from baby to adolescent to adult!  From sugar to half sugar to no sugar!  From fiber to no fiber to half fiber to fruit and fiber!  It’s just crazy!  I think there is approximately eighty different kinds of cereal on the two rows that I stock every week, and we sell it all!  I have yet to not put the same kind of cereal on the shelf every week and wonder how so many people can buy so many kinds of cereal!  It’s just crazy!

New sunroom

Filed under: Family, General Living, Home Improvement, Shopping — Copa @ 6:59 pm

My wife and I have been talking about putting in a sunroom off the back of the house, and putting some roman shades in the windows.  We really like the casual look of roman shades.  I want to buy the blackout roman shades just in case we want to use the room from time to time for guests to sleep in if we have an overflow of guests.  I’m going to order some free samples from www.selectblinds.com.

New awning

Filed under: General Living, Home Improvement, Shopping — Copa @ 6:51 pm

I have been looking at new awnings for about two years.  The front of the house gets really hot and a couple of my friends have awnings on their house; they really make a difference inside their house, it keeps it cool.  Then they don’t have to turn the air conditioning on as much.  I have looked at several brochures and ads and I am still deciding which company to go with.  But one thing is for sure; we are going to put new awnings on the front of my house this summer!

My overweight neighbor

Filed under: Friends, General Living, Health, Shopping — Copa @ 7:11 am

One of my neighbors told me that he is looking into having lap band surgery to correct his obesity problem.  He has tried all kinds of weight loss conroe methods in the past but just can’t seem to lose weight.  Having surgery is a last resort option, but his doctor said that if he doesn’t lose weight soon he will die.  There is a medical facility called JourneyLite that he has contacted to see if lap band surgery is right for him.

Tangled mess

Filed under: Family, General Living — Copa @ 6:11 am

I got up this morning and let the dogs outside as usual.  It wasn’t fifteen minutes before my wife mentioned “the dogs are tangled again; the little one can’t even get to the house.”  Well, she goes out a lot herself and untangles them; what we really need is some new cords, but being short on money (and needing the exercise) we go out and untangle them on a regular basis.  This time they were REALLY tangled!  I know I only spent two or three minutes untangling them (quietly cussing to myself) and said to myself “boy I hope in the future I’m able to go buy some new cords so they are easier to untangle!”  They are really becoming a pain in the neck but we enjoy the dogs!  So be it!

Family reunion in June – all the Harleys will be there

One weekend this coming June there is going to be a huge big family reunion deal at my mother-in-law’s house. I’m pretty sure that all the Harleys will be there. I thought it would be a really fun thing to do to order some special commemorative custom t-shirts from bluecotton.com to mark the occasion to give to the family members that come to the reunion. I can custom design a t-shirt, either custom printed or custom embroidery from the website and have them ready in time for the reunion. I think that would be really awesome, and I bet everyone would love them!

Harleys in the family

Filed under: Cars/Motorcycles/Trucks, Family, Fun, General Living — Copa @ 12:18 pm

My wife brought to my attention how many men there are between our two families that own Harleys.  It seems to me that almost all of them do!  There seems to be a special camaraderie among Harley owners that my wife just can’t seem to understand.  She understands that Harleys are a status symbol (I didn’t know that myself until she told me!) but she doesn’t understand the bond one Harley owner feels with another.  It’s kind of hard to explain, really.
